Open Day at Nell’s Point Coastwatch Station

The National Coastwatch Station at Nell’s Point, Barry Island, recently held a very successful Open Day, which will now become an annual event.   Members of the public were able to view the station and ask questions about the work that Watchkeepers do. A display showing the history of the building and its recent refurbishment was of great interest.

Having been open since mid February, the Coastwatch Station is now well equipped to look out for anything untoward happening out at sea or on the shoreline. Thanks to donations from Dow Corning, Cardiff Bus, and Cardiff Rotary Club as well as private donations, a range of equipment, including radar, has now been bought to help Watchkeepers to do their job.

NCI is a charity and we have to be self-sufficient, so a variety of fundraising events are planned throughout the year. Details will soon be displayed on our new notice board at the Station, in the local press, and our web site.

Watchkeepers are a team of volunteers from all walks of life. Full training is given to trainees. Please phone or e-mail for details of how to join.

Other events attended this summer include a very successful choir evening at Rhoose village hall where through generous donations we raised some much needed funds.   We then attended the Boat show at Margam Park with recruitment and fundraising high on the agenda.      Next came the Scouts and Guides fete at Romilly Park Barry, again picking up new recruits and raising funds.

The final major event of the summer was the Tall ships festival at Barry Waterfront on the 1st and 2nd of September.
This annual event was very well supported this year with large crowds on both days. The main attractions this year were the “Prince William” which is run by the Tall Ships Youth Trust, and the “Tenatious” run by the Jubilee Sailing Trust who provide sailing opportunities for the disabled.   WatchKeepers manned their stall on both days and spread the word about NCI whilst raising funds and again attracting new members.
Saturday afternoon saw a much looked forward to event when one of our members Janet Marshall was sponsored to climb the mast of the “Prince William” which she took on and completed in fine style.
Sunday morning all NCI members were invited on a tour of the Prince William. The guided tour was led by Jeni Sweet a WatchKeeper at Nells Point who is also a Watch supervisor on the Prince William. This rounded off a very enjoyable weekend with every one looking forward to next year.
